Hello, I’m Maryam Ebrahimpour, hairmakeup expert and instructor, including braiding, chignon, haircuts and working with hair products.

Today I’m going to show you how to do a cornrow braid. This type of braid is an African hair braid which for short hairs is usually done from the front to the back of the head and for long hair, it’s usually done on the top of the head from one ear to another. It can be done in different styles. But here I’m going to start with a simple braid done on the scalp. You can look for more complicated styles later.

Select a small batch of hair and split that into three smaller parts. If I want the braid to look bolder, I do it with knots from under the hair. So I start by knotting under. Put the small batch from the right and drag it under the one in the center. I do the same for the batch on the left. For a simple braid, we have to start braiding from below. Add an extra layer to the batch on the right and drag it under the center batch and create a knot. Again add a new batch of hair under the right batch and drag it to the center. Then proceed to add another knot. Use your thumb to hold the batch on the left to prevent the braid from getting loose. Again add a new batch of hair under the right batch and drag it below the center batch. Add another knot. Continue this until the end. Continue until the back of the head and tie it up.

For this type of braid, the hair must be completely brushed. and since there are lots of smaller or fragmented strands of hair close to the scalp, we must also use some hair gel. I have now separated another batch of hair immediately on the side of the previous braid and divided it into three parts like before. Now I can start braiding from below. Add an extra layer to the right batch and drag it to the center below the center batch. I repeat the same process from right to the center and pull it tight. You can either continue to braid the hair until you reach the back of the hair, or you can just tie the hair here.

Separate another part of the hair and braid it like before. How you choose the layers depends on how thick or thin you want your braid to look. But it would look better if the batch of hair is no more than two fingers wide. Take another batch of hair and separated it into three parts. Do as you’ve done before. Add an extra layer to the right batch and drag it to the center below the center batch.

The braids can be done based on the natural style of the face. You can design the braid in a way to be suitable for most faces. Generally, this type of braid doesn’t suite oblong faces. For cases like this, you can choose your hairdesign in a way that makes the face look more round. Or as some people prefer, you can do this type of braid on the side and then brush or add waves to the hair. Braiding is one of the most beautiful hair designs which adds an especial beauty and elegance to the hair.

Starting again with another batch of hair. Separate it into three small parts and start braiding. Add an extra layer to the right batch and drag it below the batch in the center. So for each layer on the right, you have to add an extra layer and then put in under the center batch.

I’m going to tie the hair right here. You can use elastic rubber bands to tie the hair and if the band is too thin you can use two to make sure it won’t rip. You can keep going and braid the hair until the end of the hair and when you brush the hair the braid will stand on top of the brushed hair. If you are doing a chignon, you can use the braids inside the chignon.

We’re almost done here. I’ve usedtiny flowers on top of each braid. You can also braid the rest of the hair on the side or just collect it and add waves or just brush it.
